We Interrupt This Writing Challenge…

…for an important announcement.

Today was supposed to be launch day for the new Completely You! blog site. After Lisa Boyd, aka the Tech Dudette, worked diligently over the weekend to have the site up and running, yours truly (yep, that’s me!) had some last-minute design issues that I had to address. You know how a dress may look good in the sales paper and even better on the rack, but when you get your curves into it it’s a different story? Either the color doesn’t complement your skin tone or the style doesn’t accentuate your positives. Well, that’s kind of what happened to me. The delay is completely on me, so feel free to express your disappointment in the comments. I can take it!! LOL… Hey, it has to be right, right?

Anyhoo, just stay tuned, and I’ll let you know when I’m ready for the drum roll.

Completely trying to get it JUST right ME,

Yesterday

Mom and me

Yesterday, was a very good day, because I spent the day with my mom. She, along with a bus load of church members and other friends, traveled a couple of hours from home for a day in the “big city”. I was invited to tag along for fellowship over lunch and a matinée performance of a popular Broadway musical that’s making its way across the country. With a high temperature of 80 degrees, a gentle breeze and not a cloud in the sky, it was an absolutely marvelous day!

Another highlight of my day, yesterday, was my FaceTime conversation with my sister who lives on the opposite side of the country. I tell you…Technology, with all of its scariness, can truly be a blessing sometimes.

In the midst of such a beautiful day, I couldn’t help but think about my father. I told my mom that Saturdays tend to be a little challenging for me. I used to call my parents every Saturday morning. I called throughout the week, as well, but many years ago (probably during my college years) Saturday mornings became our time. And IF for some reason I FAILED to call on a Saturday morning (which I sometimes did)…OH my… Well let’s just say I was never surprised to receive a call from my dad inquiring as to whether I’d LOST MY MIND, lol (since, to him, some sort of mental malfunction was the only legitimate explanation for my not calling that morning). Yesterday morning, I found myself fighting against the same sensation I’ve had in weeks past, the desire to pick up the phone and call my daddy.

I guess these memories somehow made the time spent with my mom and the technology enhanced “facetime” with my sister just a bit more precious. Yep! Yesterday was all about cherishing the little things. Until next time…

Completely cherishing mom, missing dad, being ME,

My Response to Laziness

Hey, I know you good people don’t read blog posts on Saturdays, but I’m trying to keep my end of the bargain with this self-imposed writing challenge I’ve been on. Monday’s the BIG REVEAL day, so don’t miss it.

Today, I’m keeping it simple. I’ve been thinking about this one little word all week as a suitable topic for today’s post. When I talk about laziness, I’m pretty much preaching to myself. I’ll never forget one day running across this blog site called The Lazy Christian. This site is managed by one of my fellow She Speaks conference attendees. I really enjoy checking out her site occasionally, and I promise you the blog title is what drew me there.

Now, I don’t know if she chose her title as a way of acknowledging a nasty human flaw – the propensity to procrastinate or be lazy (like me) – but I felt a little liberated just seeing it.

Confession: Sometimes I truly struggle with laziness and procrastination.

I think what makes me resent this struggle the most is that I just feel like it’s so UNgirly! LOL… I know that probably makes no sense at all to you, but that’s what goes on in my head. 🙂

First step in overcoming, as with anything that plagues us, is to acknowledge the shortcoming. So I went to God’s word for help. It’s my goal to read a chapter in Proverbs each day. I may not always make it, but fact of the matter is there’s no good reason for me to succumb to laziness all the days of my life if I’m reading Proverbs all the time . Besides, I have too darn much work to do. So here are a few verses in Proverbs that I have written down on index cards and carry along with me to read throughout my day:

Proverbs 6:6-8 (NASB): Go to the ant, O sluggard, observe her ways and be wise, which having no chief, officer or ruler prepares her food in the summer and gathers her provision in the harvest.

Proverbs 12:4 (NASB): A man will be satisfied with good by the fruit of his words and the deeds of a man’s hands will return to him.

Proverbs 12:11 (NASB): He who tills his land will have plenty of bread, but he who pursues worthless things lacks sense.

Proverbs 12:24 (NASB): The hand of the diligent will rule, but the slack hand will be put to forced labor.

Proverbs 14:23 (NASB): In all labor there is profit, but mere talk leads to poverty.

Proverbs 21:25 (NASB): The desire of the sluggard puts him to death, for his hands refuse to work.

Proverbs 22:13: The sluggard says, there is a lion outside, I will be killed in the streets.

If you’re like me and you need a little kick in the rear every now and again to remind you that you have work to do, I hope these verses will help as much as they help me. “There’s a lion outside, I will be killed in the streets.” Come on…REALLY?! 🙂 Sometimes any excuse will do, right? Have a good weekend, everyone!

3 Reason Why I’m Excited

E is for excited. NO, that’s not me in the picture, but she’s a woman with a laptop on her lap (like me at this very moment), and she’s excited! And so am I….I am VERY EXCITED, and I can think of at least three reasons why! Here goes:

1. It’s Friday. That’s always pretty exciting, right?!

2. I’m expecting a special delivery today. Not a stork kind of delivery. This is just a FED EX, USPS, OR UPS kind of delivery. I’m old school. I love getting cards, letters, and packages in the mail.

3. Last, but certainly not least, I am excited because next Monday  (if all goes according to schedule) will be the “move that bus” day for our new blog home. It’s BIG REVEAL time, and I’m soooo excited about it! If you believe I am excited about number one and number two, TRUST ME, #3 is the leader of the pack!

It’s been a long time coming, and it will be so cool to log on and see a place that “looks like me”. For those of you who used the “sign me up” email subscription button, your subscription will be moved to the new place automatically. If for some reason that doesn’t go off without a hitch, I’ll let you know. For those of you who subscribed via the WordPress “follow” button, your transfer may require a bit of manual labor on your part. 🙂 You may have to visit the new site and click “follow” again. I know, I know… I’m not a manual labor girl, either, but this is easy. I’m guessing you won’t even break a sweat! 😉

That’s all for today. Yep! Seriously!! 🙂 It’s Friday, so I decided to keep it light! See you tomorrow with yet another L post. No love this time, though…I don’t think….We’ll see. Until then….

Completely EXCITED ME,

T is for Trust

A few weeks ago I popped into a nail salon on my way home from work. I was over my dry, brittle natural nails, so I was in the market to buy some new ones. LOL… sounds so funny, but it’s true. I wanted a brand new full set of nails – pink and white solar they call them. Sucker is probably what they called me. Another way to get my money is what I call them, so we all had names for each other.

I didn’t have an appointment, so the first available technician scurried over to perform my requested service. After 2 or 3 hours of sanding and shaping, painting and drying, I was finally set free. Sadly, I wasn’t super impressed with the results. They were nice, but I’ve seen nicer. I’ve HAD nicer. To me (even after all of my coaching) they were still too wide, too thick, too square-ish (not square the way I like them), not to mention too darn expensive.

Here’s the kicker… I walked away with TWO fingers wounded in the line of duty – one on each hand. The technician looked at me with pity. I believe I even smelled the scent of disdain, as if I was somewhat of a wuss whose fingers were too fragile for her abrasive (and carelessly wielded, I might add), emery board.

Fast forward a few weeks, and my new nails are in desperate need of some time, love and tenderness (especially tenderness). With my ring finger on my left hand and my poor little pinky on my right hand still protesting from their last salon visit, I knew there was no way I could take them to the same place. I decided to take my digits and my dollars elsewhere. But where?

One of my girlfriends had already patronized one of the neighborhood salons, so I thought I’d give them a try. A male tech, possibly the owner, greeted me as I took a deep breath and crossed the threshold into the salon. I told him what I wanted, took a seat, we were off to the races.

About halfway through the process, my adversary – the dreaded emery board – made its first appearance. I know he was working on my fingers, but I promise you I think my toes and the rest of my body would have cut out of there if they could have left my little hands behind. Every muscle in my body seemed to contract in unison; my poor little fingers braced for what was expected to be more abuse.

I couldn’t take it. I politely stopped the man and told him, “Hey, I have not had a good experience with those, and I have the scars to prove it.” Like a little kid, I proceeded to point out my boo boos while sharing the sordid details of my last nail salon/technician experience. The gentleman listened patiently, still armed with emery board in hand and eager to complete the task at hand. After I finished pleading my case he looked at me and simply said, “Not me. That’s not me.” He quietly put his head down and continued to work.

Wow.

This really made me think. How many times have I repeated the stories of wounds created and scars left by people from my past? How many times have I opted not to trust someone in my present because of a past experience? I can tell you. Plenty! Sure there’s a place for sharing your story, and past experiences do offer wisdom for future encounters. However, when those experiences prevent me from trusting others, building relationships can get a little tricky.

I have not one scar from my visit to the salon, and the price didn’t pinch either.  Were my nails perfect? No. Can I see flaws? Sure, but nothing I can’t live with and probably things only visible to me. Still more nuggets of wisdom from my visit… That day I walked out with a two for one from the nail salon – my nails looked great, and I received a little life lesson on trust.

Completely ME,
